Mark Morris has just announced the following:

“I’m pleased to announce that THE 2ND SPECTRAL BOOK OF HORROR STORIES is now open to submissions! Stories can be any length (though the preferred length is 2000-8000 words) and payment is £20 per 1000 words, up to a maximum of £100, which means that if you submit a story that’s over 5000 words it will be on the understanding that you’ll be giving us those additional words for free. The closing date for submissions is June 30th, and the book will be launched at FantasyCon in October. Due to the volume of stories I’m expecting to receive over the next few months it may take a while for me to get back to you, and my responses may, by necessity, be brief (I have my own writing deadlines to meet, after all). All submissions should be sent to

spectralhorror2@gmail.com

and stories should be double-spaced in a clear, readable font. There’s no theme for the anthology – all I’m looking for are well-written, original, disturbing stories that push my buttons. If you want further clues as to the kinds of stories I like, I recommend you buy and read a copy of the inaugural volume of THE SPECTRAL BOOK OF HORROR STORIES, which is available from Spectral Press. Thanks – and good luck!”

The Spectral Book of Horror Stories will once again feature a cover by Vincent Chong.

PRICES WILL REMAIN THE SAME AS LAST YEAR AND WE WILL ACCEPT ADVANCE ORDERS – EMAIL spectralpress[AT]gmail[DOT]com for details.

Thank you!

  1. I’m from the Philippines and I write stories in English. Just wanna ask if you’re accepting submissions from other countries. Many thanks.

  2. Hi. What are your feelings about profanity? The next-to-main character in the story I’m considering sending never got past college emotionally, and it shows.

    Dear Simon

I write and submit horror stories. I think it was duotrope that I saw the spectral book of horrors in and I’m very interested in submitting to the book, what format should I submit in, as I don’t see any info about any particular fomat? Also do I have to put
SBoHS 2 in the subject line with title etc? Does the pages have to be numbered either with footers or headers and does the title have be on every page? Just one more question: Do you accept artwork? Your help in the above matters would be most kindly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    • Hello Maria!

No particular submission requirements except that it should be a Word doc and in a legible font size (12pt Times New Roman will do). Put in SBoHS2 submission in the subject line, and in the body of the email (addressed to Mark Morris) a covering letter with the title of the story, word count, your name and address and a short bio (especially publication history). Then send away (Mark will be reading and choosing the stories).

      Best of luck!

Hello and sorry to bother you again, but there’s just three other things I would like to clarify. As I understand it from your answer to my original post I have to put SBoHS2 in both the subject line and body of the email am I correct in my interpretation of your answer? Also when addressing to Mark Morris do I put his name in the subject line too? Finally, would the covering letter with all my details have to be sent separately and in advance of the email containing the attached file.

Your help in the above matters would be kindly appreciated. Again Thank you for all your time.

    Kind regards.

    Miss Maria Bertolone

  7. Hello Simon

And thank you for your latest reply and all your time and patience. I’m already at work getting my story typed up on the computer. I’ve got half a page done up to now.

    With Kind regards.

    • Hello SistersDent

Dark fiction of some description – psychological horror, for instance, would fit the bill nicely, or some kind of unsettling host story… phobias and fears, real or imagined…

  8. Hello Simon

I submitted my story to Spectral Horrors Volume 2 as promised following the guidence you kindly gave me. It was sent on the 29th June as I had a bit of tidying up to do on it.
Was just wondering if you had received it? Only of late I have been having issues with people sometimes not getting my emails. If it would be possible to kindly let me know,
I appreciate how busy you must be.

Thank you for all your time.

    Kind regards.
    Maria
